A community in danger
What are we fundraising for?
We are raising funds to build a crucial support wall that will prevent landslides and save homes in the “Britta Sofia” non-profit housing community in Jucu de Sus, Romania.
A permanent support wall, with tough rebar and pillars drilled 40 feet deep into the earth, will cost $180,000 – as much as five new homes – but it will allow us to further develop the land and help more than 100 families.
In fact, any funds left over from the support wall project will go towards urban planning of the area, ensuring similar problems won’t crop up in the future.
Why is this needed?
Years after the first homes were finished, with unusually heavy rains, shifting of underground springs and continued land works, landslides have begun jeopardizing the hard work of volunteers, families and staff.
The infrastructure originally designed to manage water flow was overwhelmed, so in response, new drainage lines were installed and a temporary support wall was built from gabions. Essentially large wire baskets filled with rock, they served as a makeshift bulwark against the forces of nature. Today, this solution is no longer sufficient to protect the homes and the families within them.

Meet the families

Building a community, one family at a time
Real people, real families. In the first 9 duplexes on the on-profit housing „Britta Sofia” community, 16 families have already moved in and are living the joy of homeownership. The next four units, currently approaching the end of their construction, will be finished this year, so that four more families will move in by the end of 2024. There is enough land here that this can become the largest non-profit social housing community anywhere in Transylvania – with your support at this key moment in time.
25 years of service – a proven track record
The housing program in Cluj has existed since 1999, and since 2017 worked indepedently as “PRIMA DATĂ ACASĂ”. In 2022, we became a Covenant Partner of the Fuller Center for Housing. For 25 years, with help with volunteers from across the globe, we’ve build 7 communities with 100 new homes, all while helping more than 300 other families with renovations and home improvement programs.
